Bellarine & Surfcoast Living

Ocean Grove.jpg

Having lived most of my life in and around our beautiful coastal region I know the climatic conditions and locations well.

Our summers are tempered by the coastal breezes, so we do not have weeks of hot baking weather like inland locations. As such sheltered outdoor areas give the longest year round usage.

Ocean Grove, Torquay and Anglesea and other areas on the coast have South facing views of the ocean. This means decks looking at the views are often wind blown, furniture needs to be almost bolted down. For outdoor entertaining decks it is better to be facing North with the house behind. This can give options of glazed North and South walls so you maximise on ocean views.

Drysdale, Curlewis and Portarlington have North facing views of Corio Bay and the You Yangs beyond. They have the best orientation of views and sun. There can be summer days where the hot northerly winds can make the outdoor living space unbearable. This can be solved with wrap around decks or wind breaks with planting or screens to give shelter .

Two excellent orientation and views are at Lorne, Queenscliff and Indented Heads. They have areas that face an Easterly direction which is the most sheltered from winds and water views.

Every site is diiferent and carefull consideration needs to be given at design stage to make sure you are achieving the best indoor outdoor options. Our climate is mild enough to enjoy outdoor living even in winter if you design sheltered indoor outdoor areas.
